SIMPLE PROCESS

Step by step recipe

The key is the right order of layers. Start with egg whites, then tuna, cucumber, carrots, cheese, and finish with egg yolks. Season each layer lightly with salt and brush with mayonnaise. All ingredients should be grated or cut uniformly. Let the salad rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to meld the flavors. Use a springform pan or ring for a neat presentation.

Boil Eggs and Carrot
Step 1

Boil Eggs and Carrot

Hard-boil 220 g (about 4–5 large) eggs and 30 g (about 1 oz) carrot. Cook eggs for 8–10 minutes after boiling; cook carrot for about 15–20 minutes until tender. Cool and peel.

Prep the Ingredients
Step 2

Prep the Ingredients

Separate egg whites and yolks. Grate whites on a coarse grater and yolks on a fine grater. Grate carrot and 150 g (5.3 oz) semi-hard cheese on a coarse grater. Grate 200 g (7 oz) cucumber on a coarse grater or slice into thin strips, lightly salt and squeeze out excess liquid.

Flake the Tuna
Step 3

Flake the Tuna

Open the canned tuna (200 g / 7 oz), drain liquid, and flake with a fork into even pieces.

Assemble the First Layer
Step 4

Assemble the First Layer

Place a layer of grated egg whites on the bottom of a flat serving dish or springform pan. Level, lightly season with salt, and brush with mayonnaise (about 1/5 of total).

Add Subsequent Layers
Step 5

Add Subsequent Layers

Top with tuna, then cucumber (squeezed), then carrot, then cheese. Lightly salt each layer (except cheese) and brush with mayonnaise, reserving some for the top.

Finish with Yolks and Chill
Step 6

Finish with Yolks and Chill

Sprinkle the grated egg yolks on top without mayo. Garnish with herbs. Refrigerate for 30–60 minutes to let the flavors meld. Carefully remove the mold (if used) before serving.

CHEF'S TIP

Boil Eggs and Carrots in Advance

To save time, boil eggs and carrots the day before. Then you only need to grate and assemble.

Drain the Tuna Well

If tuna is packed in oil or water, drain it thoroughly and flake with a fork to prevent a watery salad.

Use Different Grates

Grate egg whites and carrots on a coarse grater for texture, and yolks on a fine grater for a fluffy top. This adds visual interest.

Let the Salad Rest

Chill the assembled salad for at least 30 minutes to allow the layers to absorb the dressing and become more flavorful.

SUBSTITUTIONS

Add your taste

  • Replace Tuna with Canned Salmon or Sardines Salmon or sardines give a different but equally delicious flavor. Keep the same amount (200 g / 7 oz).
  • Use Zucchini or Radish Instead of Cucumber Zucchini offers a neutral taste, while radish adds a peppery kick. Grate or slice them similarly.
  • Substitute Mayonnaise with Sour Cream and Mustard For a lighter dressing, mix 15% sour cream with prepared mustard (2:1 ratio) — reduces calories.
  • Add a Layer of Canned Corn For a sweet contrast, add a layer of corn between cucumber and carrots.

HOW TO STORE

How to Store Layered Tuna Salad

Keep the salad in the fridge, covered with plastic wrap, for up to 2 days. Over time, vegetables may release liquid, so it's best to make it a few hours before serving. Do not freeze. Add fresh herbs before serving.
